Calexico East is a distinct Mexicali crossing
Calexico East connects Calexico, California, and Mexicali, Baja California, east of the downtown Calexico West crossing. The Caltrans crossing record identifies the East approach with State Route 7. In CBP’s reports, East is port 250301 and West is 250302, so check the crossing name before using a wait estimate.
CBP currently lists the East port from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. This is not an overnight schedule, and the general port-hours field should not be read as a promise that every lane operates throughout that period.
Passenger, pedestrian and commercial readings
The East report contains general passenger lanes, SENTRI, Ready Lane, standard pedestrian lanes and commercial lane information. Choose the vehicle category that matches the trip. A truck reading and a family-car reading refer to different processing lanes and should not be interchanged.
Ready Lane requires eligible RFID cards for all travelers age 16 or older in a vehicle. SENTRI requires prior approval under CBP’s trusted traveler program. If you cannot establish eligibility for a dedicated lane, plan around the general passenger reading instead.
Compare East and West without mixing their reports
The nearby Calexico West port has a separate CBP report and is listed as operating 24 hours a day. When considering a different crossing, compare the correct lane at each facility and verify its hours before changing your route. A shorter queue at East is of no help if the relevant lane is closed when you arrive.
Caltrans QuickMap provides the external road-camera link on this page. Use the camera’s mapped position to confirm which approach it shows; the portal is not a verified view of every Calexico East inspection booth.
Travel documents and lane eligibility
U.S. citizens returning by land can consult CBP’s list of accepted documents, which includes valid U.S. passports and passport cards. Mexican citizens generally use a passport with visa or a Border Crossing Card. Check the official requirements for each traveler’s circumstances before leaving.
Carry out a second check for Ready Lane: a document accepted for entry is not necessarily an eligible RFID card. In particular, a passport book alone is not a Ready Lane card.
Insurance for driving in Mexicali
Prepare Mexican liability insurance before driving in Mexico. Federal-road requirements cover harm caused to third parties, including injury and property damage. CONDUSEF recommends checking policy coverage and exclusions and confirming the authorization of the insurer and agent.
Review those details while planning your route and documents.
