Identify the Hidalgo crossing

The McAllen–Hidalgo International Bridge connects Hidalgo, Texas, and Reynosa, Tamaulipas. CBP lists the crossing as Hidalgo under the Hidalgo/Pharr port group, with identifier 230501 and hours of 24 hours a day. Use that identifier when looking up the report so that another crossing in the port group is not mistaken for this bridge.

The city of McAllen identifies the bridge in Hidalgo and lists a pedestrian crossing as well as vehicle service. Plan your route to the bridge you intend to use and check the status close to departure. The posted port hours do not guarantee that every individual lane is open around the clock.

Read the queue that fits your trip

For entry to the United States, CBP reports passenger vehicles and pedestrians separately. Its passenger report includes general, Ready Lane and SENTRI fields. The pedestrian report includes a standard lane field. A closed lane, an unavailable report and a zero-minute estimate mean different things; do not treat a blank field as a promise of no wait.

Compare the update time as well as the number of minutes. The displayed figure is an estimate for the reported category, not a reservation or a guarantee of when inspection will finish. Follow signs and officers at the bridge if the current arrangement differs from your plan.

Use the city camera with the CBP report

McAllen provides a bridge-camera page for northbound and southbound traffic at McAllen–Hidalgo. The page explains how to access the views. A camera can help you see traffic in its field of view, while the CBP report provides an estimated wait for the selected category.

A visual queue does not establish a wait time or show whether a dedicated lane is open. Check the camera and the report together, keeping the direction of travel in mind. The camera page may require its listed public login instructions.

Documents and dedicated lanes

Check the U.S. entry documents required for each traveler’s citizenship and immigration status. CBP lists a valid U.S. passport and passport card among land-entry documents for U.S. citizens. Allow time to locate everyone’s documents before reaching inspection.

Ready Lane eligibility is separate from general entry eligibility. CBP requires an eligible RFID-enabled travel card for every traveler age 16 or older; a passport book alone is not an eligible Ready Lane card. SENTRI is a trusted traveler program requiring prior approval. Verify both eligibility and the current lane status before choosing a restricted lane.

Driving into Mexico

If your itinerary also includes driving south into Mexico, arrange liability coverage valid there. Mexican federal-road rules require insurance covering harm to third parties. CONDUSEF recommends checking the policy’s coverage and exclusions and verifying that the insurer and agent are authorized.

Keep the policy and travel documents accessible, and consult the current bridge information before setting out. The northbound CBP wait estimate does not describe the southbound journey.
